How we stay informed and what sources we use shape the way we see the world. In the current AI climate, it’s so hard to keep up with everything, and it can easily get overwhelming. It’s gotten to a point where I have periods where I just don’t read any AI news at all. If you’re trying to work on your own projects and you constantly see a new update, it can become a bit too much.
A few years ago, though, I realised that where I got my AI news from was very biased. Big news platforms from the UK or the US only show a fraction of all the progress that’s going on. And usually, the majority of the world is not included. But I want to know what’s going on everywhere in the world. And I don’t just want to hear from Big Tech companies; what about small grassroots communities that are actively tackling the real-world problems they are facing daily? What about activist groups that resist certain technology trends because they are negatively affected by them? What about all the incredible researchers all over the world who are quietly working on solutions and don’t believe the hype? I would really like some recommendations on which news platforms or newsletters you follow, as I want to expand my knowledge on what is going on everywhere on this planet.
What I consume
So far, I have truly cherished the work Rest of World is doing, or newsletters from the Indigenous Futures Research Centre & Abundant Intelligences, Deep Learning Indaba, and Colorintech.
